EBU has the status of accepted non-governmental organisation at the Central Commission for the Navigation on the Rhine CCNR, representing the interests of inland waterway transport and advising the CCNR regarding
• the development of the inland waterway market
• the nautical and technical aspects of the inland waterway transport
• the transport of dangerous goods on inland waterways

EBU is advising the institutions of the European Union in realising a modal shift and better position of inland waterway transport by supplying information about the actual situation on the inland waterway market and reflecting on the proposals and decisions of the European institutions such as
• the White Paper by the European Commission
• the guidelines of the Trans-European networks
• the Marco Polo program
